Monthly Newsletter - November 2024
The frost has arrived (just!) and the leaves have fallen off the trees, which only means one thing... winter is here and Christmas is fast approaching! A quiet month for racing but there was still plenty of action behind the scenes educating the yearlings for the 2025 season and prepping for the annual yearling parade!
November's Runners Highlights
WHIZZ BY (pictured above on far side) put her best foot forward on her second outing to Southwell bringing home a win in the seven furlong contest on the 12th November. From her first win just 18 days earlier on 24th October 2024, the handicapper had raised her 7lb but she proved too good here.
Under Hector Crouch, the two year old filly jumped from the stalls, settling in mid division. When around the final bend, WHIZZ BY squeezed through the gap to make the running. She was challenged towards the finish but battled hard and got her nose in front, winning by a neck. This is her second win from five starts.
WHIZZ BY was bred by New England Stud and Mount Coote Stud. She races for Fitorfat Racing 1 and she is by New Bay out of the Desert Prince mare, Whazzis. WHIZZ BY will now have a quieter couple of months before hitting the track again in the new year.
There were two other notable appearances this month from our stable stalwarts;
CAPOTE’S DREAM was a game second on 9th November at Doncaster, beaten by half a length, under Liam Wright in the Class 4 Apprentice handicap. He will now have a short break for the winter before preparing for a spring campaign. Capote’s Dream is by Dream Ahead, out of the Capote mare, Capote West. He is owned by Fitorfat Racing.
On 18th November, DIAMOND BAY headed to Wolverhampton for the 2m Handicap, finishing 3rd under Sean Levey. He will continue to race over the winter on the all weather so keep your eyes peeled for future entries! Diamond Bay is owned by Ebury Racing 5 and he is by New Bay, out of the Dalakhani mare Amarillo Starlight.
Meet The Team
Matt Birch
Age & Where are you from:
36, from Kent
Your role at Tom Ward Racing:
2nd Travelling Head Lad
How long have you worked for Tom:
Just over 2 and a half years
Favourite Horse:
There can only be 1 horse that I used to work with at my last job. He is the horse in the picture (above) called Baasem (Jumbo). He was a big lovable friendly idiot of a horse with a personality as big as he was, from climbing into his water manger to have a splash on a summers day to herding cattle back into the field when they had escaped on our way to the gallops. There was never a dull moment with Jumbo.
Favourite Racing Moment:
It would have to be riding my first winner. It was always my dream as a kid to be a jockey so to actually do it a bit and have some success meant a lot
If you had a fully paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Either a fishing trip down the Amazon river living wild in the rainforest or a month travelling around the Alps carp fishing
If you had one superpower, what would it be?
Well a lot of people already think I have powers of invisibility but some sort of power to be able to see where the carp are hiding on any lake would be very helpful

Yearling Parade
On Sunday 17th November, we saw over 50 people in attendance at Whitehouse Stables for our annual yearling parade. The brochures were laid out, the coffee was hot and the bloody Mary’s were being served alongside honey & mustard sausages and mini croissants. PLUS, the sun was shining!
One by one, each of the yearlings came from their stable and paraded to the crowd whilst Tom talked through each of their pedigrees and the ownership opportunities available. Next up came the horses in training that had shares available. There was three new purchases from the October HIT sale as well as a couple of horses that have shares left that are already with us. After this, everyone headed into the tipi for a hearty hog roast roll and a glass of wine whilst catching up. It was a great day for all!
We are finalising the syndicate/ partnerships for the available horses now - details of each are on our website under ‘horses for sale’ or scan the QR code below. If you would like any further information and register your interest, please do get in contact on [email protected]
Thank you very much to those of you who generously contributed to our staff Christmas bonuses to thank them for their hard work throughout the year. If you didn’t have a chance to do so, please email [email protected].
Christmas is coming!
On Friday 15th November, whilst the tipi was up and running, we made full use of it for the weekend and hosted an early staff Christmas party. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the year and thank the staff for all of their hard work throughout the year with the horses.
Nathan from The Forge in Aldbourne bought his pizza van, and made freshly baked pizzas whilst we played a few games (including darts!) and had a few drinks. A lovely, memorable evening for us all to celebrate.
