Monthly Newsletter - July

We’re midway through the season, the horses are flying with 4 wins in July and the sales season is fast approaching with catalogues being analysed in search of our next superstar!

July's Runner Highlights

SHADY BAY (above) headed to Nottingham on 5th July. Alec Voikhansky was in the saddle for the 1m 2f handicap. The pair were drawn in stall 6. After jumping from the stalls, Shady Bay settled towards the rear of the field and was ridden patiently. Once into the final furlong, she won going away by 5 lengths.

The four year old filly headed back to the track on 24th July, this time at Newbury, and again under Alec Voikhansky. Shady Bay sat prominently over the 1m 2f distance and pulled away inside the final furlong to win by 2 lengths. She looked to be going for the hat trick in August so keep an eye out for those entries!

SHADY BAY is by New Bay, out of the Rahy mare, Soft Lips. She is owned by P Afia, E Hobson, A Pegley and C & R Russell.

KINGDOM OF STARS made his appearance at Kempton Park a winning one on 9th July. He was partnered with Colin Keane for the two mile handicap. The pair were prominent throughout and in touch with the leaders, with Kingdom Of Stars getting his nose in front to lead in the final furlong. He rallied and kept on to win by three quarters of a length.

KINGDOM OF STARS is by Cloth Of Stars, out of the Sageburg mare, Passing Burg. From Kingdom Of Star’s last 4 runs, he has placed 3 times & won once.  He is owned by White & Partner.

PERFECT LOCATION (above) learnt plenty on her debut last month to make her second start a winning one on 13th July. The two year old filly stayed on gamely at Southwell over six furlongs. She was ridden by Sean Levey in the pink & maroon colours of Only Fillies Racing Club.

The daughter of Cable Bay broke well from stall 7 and was prominent & up with the leaders. She refused to be caught in the final furlong, and crossed the line in front by a neck.

PERFECT LOCATION is by Cable Bay, out of the Excelebration mare, Perfect Lady. She was bred by Mildmay Farm & Stud, and is owned by Mildmay Racing & Only Fillies RC.

Ones To Watch

TRANSPARENT headed back to the track after being gelded last month. The 3 year old was at Southwell on 13th July. Sean Levey was in the saddle for the 1m distance and the pair were unlucky inside the final furlong to be beaten by 3/4 length. It won’t be long until the talented son of Mehmas is back in the winners enclosure.

LITTLE JAYBEE was unlucky on 31st July finishing in second at Nottingham after being headed in the final 110 yards. Alec Voikhansky was in the saddle for the 5f distance and the 2 year old daughter of Due Diligence will be winning again soon.

Meet The Team

Sam McCullagh

Age & Where you are from:

30, from North Yorkshire

Your role at Tom Ward Racing:

Head Lad

How long have you worked for Tom:

8 months

Favourite Horse:

Golden Pal - he’s the best I’ve ever been lucky to work with. He was just so naturally fast and had a brilliant mind to go with it. I was gutted he got beaten as a 2yo in the Norfolk, but he got his Group 1’s as an older horse. He has his first 2yo’s in 2026 and I would be amazed if he doesn’t make a successful stallion.

Favourite Racing Moment:

Frankel’s Guineas - it was one of those races where you couldn’t quite believe your eyes.

If you had a fully paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Breeders Cup, Del Mar. It looks an amazing setting, high class racing and a great way to sign off the season if you’re lucky enough to have a horse good enough to get a start.

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

The ability to slow down & stop time. So you can savour the best moments of your life and have longer to spend with friends & family.

A Race for HEROS

On the 24th July, Alice swapped the office chair for a racehorse and made her debut in the saddle at Newbury Racecourse in the HEROs Charity race. Partnered with Tintoretto for the 1m 2f distance, the pair finished in 4th place.

To be allowed to take part in the race,  £1,500 had to be raised for the charity, and Alice passed the minimum donation with flying colours. Thank you to all who donated and contributed, it was for a great cause and a lot of fun was had!

And they’re off….
