Monthly Newsletter - January 2025

2025 had a sensational start with runners on the track putting their best foot forward for the new year. We also had a few of the horses return from their winter break and it is full steam ahead to prepare the team for the fast approaching turf season. There is certainly plenty to look forward to with some lightly raced three year olds as well as some exciting older horses with black type potential and not forgetting, the group of two year olds who are just starting to step up in their work and figure out what life is all about…

January's Runner Highlights

The runners for January did not disappoint, with the team carrying a 50% strike rate by 9th January with 2 winners from 4 runners. Throughout the rest of the month, there were other notable performers meaning the total prize money for the month was over £11,500.

WHIZZ BY (below) got January off with a bang as she landed a hat-trick on 3rd January to make it 3-3 on her recent starts. Sean Levey was in the saddle with our first runner for 2025. The three year old filly was prominent jumping from the stalls and tucked in behind the 7/4 favourite over the seven furlong distance at Southwell. She kicked off from the bend, finding enough to cross the line in front winning by half a length. WHIZZ BY races for FitorFat Racing 1 and was bred by New England Stud & Mount Coote Stud. She is by New Bay, out of the Desert Prince mare, Whazzis. From a total of 6 starts, this filly has a 50% strike rate, winning 3 times.

TRANSPARENT (above) made his second start a winning one on Wednesday 8th January at Kempton Park, giving the team a second winner in the first week of January.

The three year old colt was steered by Sean Levey over the seven furlong distance. The pair were in amongst the action before hitting the front deep in the last furlong, and made all to win going away by almost two lengths. TRANSPARENT was purchased by Tom at the Tattersalls Breeze Up sales in May 2024 for £54,000 and he is owned by The Transparent Syndicate. He is by Mehmas, out of the Lope De Vega mare, Light Glass. He looks to be ‘one to watch’ for 2025.

A fabulous start to the year for the team, giving everyone enthusiasm and anticipation for the turf season ahead. It wasn’t just the winners however that added a buzz around the yard at home. PERFECT PAROLE, owned by Mildmay Racing, followed up her great run last month to land a third at Lingfield. The filly worked hard being forced wide but ran on well inside the final furlong. She will head back to the track in early February and isn’t far away from a win. Another notable third was CLOUD FREE. At Lingfield again, the gelding was prominent and led from over a furlong out and was just unluckily headed from within the last half furlong. A great first run on his debut for the stable, he was purchased by Tom at the Autumn HIT sale in October and is owned by AG Racing. The ever consistent LADY DREAMER also returned to action and the yard newcomer, BEVERAGINO put in good efforts to place fourth at Wolverhampton and Southwell respectively.

Where are they now?

There are several reasons why horses may retire from their career as a racehorse. Some might retire due to injury or age, while others might have just decided that they don’t love the game anymore. At Tom Ward Racing, we know that when the time comes and a horse finishes their career as a racehorse, they still have huge potential and a huge future in a second career.

We always love hearing about the new adventures of previous Whitehouse Stables recruits that have gone on to have a happy and successful second career. Pictured is some of the horses that have previously been in training at Tom Ward Racing. They have gone on to have varied careers from hunting, dressage, polo and even to horse ball!

Pictured below is DANSEMAI. Despite never having won for the team, she had a few very good places, and is thriving in her new career as a polo pony.

RAGING RASCAL (below top right) found his new love in horse ball. He is even featured on TikTok!

MOURIYANI (below bottom right) won 3 races for the team in 2020, earning over £20,000 in prize money. He is loving life and has really taken to his new career in show jumping.

From winning races to jumping hedges, ZHUI FENG (below) switched his competitive talent for the hunting field.

Thoroughbreds really are the most versatile breed and life does not finish for them once they leave the racing yard. If you own a previous Tom Ward Racing recruit, please do let us know what they are up to in their second careers. We love to hear all about them!
